It’s not that you don’t know how to relax; it’s that your mind seems to have a mind of its own. You solve one worry and another one is already waiting in line behind it: work, money, your family’s health, something you said three days ago, something that might happen next month.
Even when things are objectively fine, there’s a low hum of “but what if” running in the background, and it rarely fully switches off. You might find yourself over-preparing for everything, replaying conversations, or feeling physically tense — tight shoulders, a clenched jaw, a stomach that’s rarely fully settled — without always connecting it back to worry itself.
This is different from everyday stress, and it’s more than “just being a worrier.” Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a diagnosable condition marked by persistent, excessive worry across multiple areas of life that’s difficult to control and doesn’t let up, even when there’s no immediate problem to solve. It can leave you mentally exhausted by things that haven’t even happened yet.
At Chrysallís Wellness Center, we help you understand the specific patterns driving your worry and build real tools to quiet a mind that’s been on high alert for far too long. Reach our to our compassionate team today.

Our Whole-Person Approach to GAD
GAD tends to respond well to a combination of approaches, since it affects both thought patterns and the body’s baseline stress response. Recognizing GAD
GAD tends to be more persistent and harder to pin to one specific cause than typical anxiety. Common signs include:
- Excessive worry about multiple areas of life (work, health, finances, or family) most days, for months at a time
- Difficulty controlling the worry once it starts
- Restlessness or feeling constantly keyed up or on edge
- Fatigue, despite the worry itself feeling mentally exhausting
- Difficulty concentrating, or your mind going blank
- Irritability
- Muscle tension, headaches, or GI discomfort
- Sleep disturbances: trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up already anxious
GAD often runs alongside depression, panic symptoms, or burnout, and it can develop gradually enough that many people don’t realize how long they’ve been carrying it until it’s pointed out.
GAD vs. Anxiety: What's the Difference?
“Anxiety” is a broad, umbrella term. It can describe anything, from nervousness before a big event to specific conditions like panic disorder or social anxiety. GAD is one specific diagnosis under that umbrella, and it’s helpful to understand how it differs from anxiety in the everyday sense:
| Everyday Anxiety | Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) |
|---|---|
| Usually tied to a specific event or stressor | Worry spreads across multiple areas of life, work, health, finances, family |
| Tends to ease once the situation resolves | Persists most days, often for six months or longer, regardless of circumstances |
| A normal, adaptive response to a real challenge | Difficult to control, even when there’s no immediate problem to solve |
| May cause mild, short-term discomfort | Often comes with physical symptoms (muscle tension, fatigue, sleep problems) and can interfere with daily functioning |
In short: everyone experiences anxiety sometimes. GAD is what it’s called when that worry becomes chronic, pervasive, and hard to switch off, which is exactly why it calls for a more targeted treatment approach than “just relax” or “stop worrying so much.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Only a medical provider can make that determination based on how long, how pervasive, and how disruptive your worry has been.
GAD can improve, but it’s best addressed with professional treatment rather than left to resolve on its own. Talk to a medical provider about your options.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is widely considered a leading treatment for GAD, though a medical provider can recommend what’s right for you specifically.
